CEDAR WOOD 'N THINGS is a small business run by husband and wife team: Andy and Heather.  Andy is the creative artist and craftsman whose ideas never become stagnant. Every piece is designed and handcrafted to the highest quality.  Heather does the fine sanding and finishing touches. Andy is a true artist and each and every piece is unique and built to last a life time.  We believe the best way to achieve and retain customer satisfaction is by providing original, extremely durable products and dealing directly with the owners. Having no “middle man” keeps our prices down and our standards high. 

Products

Most of our products are made from 100% white cedar (products specify if different).  Every log is hand picked from downed timber or lot clearing logs and transported to our saw lot where they are custom milled and hand-peeled.  Each product is built, sanded and stained on site throughout the spring and summer months.

Our furniture is massive and quite heavy, built to last for generations. Some of our tables and benches have “book-matched” tops, which means the boards are made from the same log and reflect a mirror-image.  Most of the large items are constructed with 10” house log screws to ensure stability and endurance.

Live Edge

Most of our furniture have “live-edges” - the outside of the log remains on the product. Each of these live-edges have a unique rustic look.

Finishing

Most of the pieces are sold with an outdoor linseed oil based stain, available in three shades:  natural, brown and reddish.  Although cedar does not have to be stained, this finish preserves the original look of the wood and gives it a much richer look. This stain does not chip or peel but will gradually fade. Our products can be sold unfinished and over time, the natural weathering will turn the wood to a silver-gray hue.

About Cedar and Characteristics of Wood

Cedar has a light brown heartwood and a white sapwood which grows slowly and can be difficult to find in large diameters.  We use mainly Eastern White Cedar found in Eastern Ontario. This is the best choice of wood for outdoor furniture as it remains flat and straight and very resistant to warpage and decay.  Its stability makes it perfectly suited to high moisture areas. Cedar has a distinctive odor which makes the wood naturally resistant to insect infestations.  Properly finished and maintained, cedar can last for many, many years which makes our furniture heirlooms that can be enjoyed for many generations to come.

All logs which contain the heartwood can develop small cracks or “checks”. Checking occurs during the natural drying of the wood and in no way compromises the quality or durability of the product. It only adds to the unique rustic look of the finished pieces.
